Famous Ghost Photograph: Mabel Chinnery's Backseat Ghost

chinnery

In 1959, Mable Chinnery took this photograph while visiting her mother's gravesite. According to Mable, her husband was the only person in the car at the time. When she developed the film, she noticed someone in the backseat. When she looked closer, she realized the image was that of her mother—the same woman whose grave she had been visiting!

A photographic expert examined the photo and declared that it was neither a reflection nor a double exposure. "I stake my reputation on the fact that the picture is genuine," he testified.

While the photograph does seem compelling, I've yet to see any comparisons between the picture and pictures of Mable's mother. Yet, the picture seems too good to be a fake. Typically fake photographs tend to be overdone and the image is almost always ethereal in quality. This picture doesn't fit in that category.
